Western Classical Music & Tea with Stu Goldberg

Hosted by Cassius Khan

The always engaging and magnanimous musician and host Cassius Khan and a variety of highly accomplished musicians and tea specialists take the audience on a musical journey around the world, bringing you connection to generations past through songs and experiences that have endured for thousands of years.

On April 5, join Cassius and Stu Goldberg for an illuminating afternoon of music and refreshments. Global Tea Series performances are by Pay-What-You-Can admission. Audience is encouraged to pay what they are able – there is no minimum or maximum amount – in order to keep the arts accessible for all. Payment will be collected at the door on the afternoon of the performance, and cash, credit and debit are accepted methods of payment.

Canada’s most recognizable Indian Classical musician, the globally renowned Cassius Khan is a performer of combining the Classical styles of Ghazal/Thumri singing and the Tabla, the North Indian pair of drums and presents both, simultaneously. He is the senior disciples of the late Malika e Tarannum Mushtari Begum (Dec 25th 1934-March 14th 2004) and Tabla maestro Ustad Rukhsar Ali, who belongs to the Delhi Gharana of Tabla playing. Combining Indian Classical singing with Tabla, for a single artist, is a first in Indian classical music. Many noted Indian Classical Music gurus have proclaimed that singing and playing Tabla in unison is a difficult feat to master as Tabla playing requires skill and strength, as well as an absolute concentration on the kaleidoscopic rhythm patterns of the repertoire, and singing requires absolute skill in the execution of notes and vibrations of the voice and excellent breathing control. Khan’s trademark is performing the extremely rare and difficult “Tarannum Ang Gayaki style” in which the lyrics share a different metre from the rhythm but they join at the Sum point in a certain phrase.

Stu Goldberg enjoys a prolific career composing for projects as varied as CBS TV’s hit series, 15 time Emmy winning “The Amazing Race”, hundreds of hours of episodic television, dozens of TV Movies as well as scores to over 60 films and documentaries. As performer, composer, pianist and multi-instrumentalist Stu Goldberg toured and recorded with John McLaughlin in the legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra, also with Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Al DiMeola, Larry Coryell, Alphonse Mouzon, Billy Cobham, Jack Bruce and many other luminaries. As a solo concert artist, Goldberg has performed extensively worldwide and released ten LPs, four CDs, one SACD and two HD digital soundtrack albums on his own label, Dedication Records. As a record producer, Stu Goldberg produces, arranges and engineers projects of his own and for other artists on his own label, Dedication Records, as well as on many other labels.

Running time: 150 min., includes 15-minute intermission

January 22, 2026 at 7pm

Hollywood’s embrace of Broadway bedazzlement goes back to the advent of sound films when the movies began to sing and dance. In this special presentation, classic film scholar Michael van den Bos raises the curtain and flips on the footlights for a rapturous revue of Broadway musicals adapted into motion picture razzmatazz. Featuring a curated collection of dazzling musical film clips and Michael’s colourful commentary, come experience Hollywood’s version of the Great White Way on the great big screen!

Massey Theatre Renovation Project

Massey Theatre is celebrating our 75th year since its opening in December 1949. Within that celebration of community service is the added excitement of big steps in Massey’s sustainability and growth. A multi-year renovation project is underway. The project aims to modernize the Massey Theatre complex by extending its life and improving services and efficiency in a number of ways. The Complex will be 98% more energy efficient and more areas will be wheelchair accessible. There will be 22 universal bathrooms to create a better audience experience.

With much work completed and more to come, soon the community will really start to see the transformation. The construction crew is busy in the summer months when interior and exterior work is ramping up, and we are open from October to June with fabulous performances throughout the season. Please check the City of New Westminster’s website and our website and social media for updates. We hope you will be as excited about the future as we are!

We thank the City of New Westminster for their investment in the future of Massey Theatre as an accessible community space through this significant commitment to the arts.

What Does Supporting Massey Theatre Mean?

As we enter the final week of the Great Canadian Giving Challenge, we want to talk about the Massey Theatre itself. The heart of our arts centre.

The Massey Theatre was built 75 years ago. The Massey Theatre Society has been its steward for over 40 years, and during that time has weathered many a storm — from impending closures to recessions to a global pandemic.

The Theatre is home to hundreds of events per year, ranging from community celebrations to large scale musicals, to dance recitals, rock concerts and everything in between. Indigenous artists as well as touring artists from across the globe practice in our spaces. It is the home for many organizations. The birthplace of the arts for young audience members and performers. A place where all are welcome to share. Together.

As a charitable organization, the Society presents large performances and also facilitates the use of the space by many user groups. We provide free tickets to our shows to organizations who support individuals overcoming barriers that would otherwise prevent them from going to the theatre. Recently, we offered two free tickets to every resident moving into the new affordable housing development at 861 6th street. We believe the arts should be accessible for all and we fund this program through our own revenues.

A 75-year-old theatre needs love and attention. Upgrades and reimagining. The City of New Westminster will be undertaking a large capital project to address many of these upgrades, but there is more to be done to help us lift Massey Theatre and Eighth & Eight Creative Spaces to the Arts Centre the growing community needs and deserves.

We are fundraising for a bright and dynamic future for Massey Theatre and Eighth & Eight Creative Spaces. A space where the arts and the spaces are accessible and vibrant. A space where professional artists share and create and emerging artists reach for the stars. A place where creativity shines.

If you have the means, please consider donating today as part of the Great Canadian Giving Challenge and join the global giving movement. If not, share with your friends and tell them what the Massey Theatre means to you.

The Great Canadian Giving Challenge is designed to help charities fundraise during the slow summer months when donations tend to decline and people are out enjoying the summer sun.

As it is the 10th anniversary of the challenge, from June 1st to 30th, every $1 donated to the Massey Theatre Society through CanadaHelps gives us the chance to win $10,000. Additionally, every $10 donation that you make gets you an entry to win incredible adventure-themed prizes!

During this challenge (and always) we’re fundraising for community, as community is the heart of who we are. From our Community Kitchen to our Garden/Gathering Space. From Artist Access to Artistic Collaborations. From Audience Members to Performers and Crew. These funds will help us connect more with our community as we enter our 75th year.

Help Our Garden/Gathering Space Grow

Today, we want to take you outside to the Garden/Gathering Space.

The Garden/Gathering Space has been designed to support Indigenous cultural resurgence, storytelling frameworks and stories that guide and direct us from the land outward. A space to gather and offer opportunities for connection and sharing to strengthen our futures together as a community. Led by Ronnie Dean Harris, our Indigenous Cultural Developer, six artists and community members were engaged in the design and interpretation of the Garden/Gathering Space. Atheana Picha, Diamond Point, Raine Pierre, Hailee Stogan, Kaitlyn Cunningham and Ronnie Dean Harris — their familial and community-based connections to these lands, stories and languages have helped tremendously in conceptualizing this work.

“The garden space is representative of the flow of the river and of the notion that the Transformers wrote their stories onto the land through these transformations”, said Harris. “The frame of the structure is a nod to the ancient framework of Coast Salish plank houses. This area of New Westminster does not sit on the north/south grid of the rest of the Lower Mainland but rather follows the bend in the river. So, the front of the garden faces the river and mountains and includes many native plant species, in an effort for the land to recognize itself.” In addition to native plant species and greenery, the Garden/Gathering Space will include public art and Halkomelem language installations.

This project has been generously funded by Canadian Heritage, Heritage BC and Vancouver Foundation for a combined grant support of $808,000. But in order for the space to grow to its full potential, we are looking to community support, which will go towards enhanced public art, indigenous plant and language installations, interpretive panels and displays, and more.

If you have the means, please consider donating today and directing your funds to the Garden/Gathering Space as part of the Great Canadian Giving Challenge. Until June 30th, every $1 donated to the Massey Theatre Society through CanadaHelps gives us the chance to win $10,000. Additionally, every $10 donation that you make gets you an entry to win incredible adventure-themed prizes!
