CALL TO MIND

February 1, 2017 - February 28, 2017

Artist and poet, Carla Stein began writing about the same time as she discovered crayons and tempera. She remains fascinated by the images words evoke, and finds her poetic endeavors often cross fertilize her visual compositions.
Growing up in a family of creative individuals she was exposed to viewing and making art at an early age and was deeply influenced by many hours spent playing and learning among the museums and public art displays of Chicago, Illinois.
After immigrating to Canada in 1975, she earned a fine arts diploma from Fanshawe College in London, Ontario.
Her career path has involved journalism, counseling as well as teaching art to children and adults through both recreation and therapy.
Stein’s art is primarily two dimensional including acrylics, watercolors, and ink with explorations into mixed media. Her subjects often center on the relationship of humanity to the natural world and the slowly growing recognition that non-human species feel emotion and have rights to supportive and sustainable habitats.
Stein incorporates translucent glazes with impressionist sensibilities and surrealist imagery encouraging viewers to challenge unquestioned conceptions of how we relate to our environment.
She is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.
