Yvette Gagnon

Yvette Gagnon has been
using recycled materials
to create art since she
was a young girl. She
has since discovered a
passion for working
with fractured "waste"
glass when she found
tons of broken glass and
thought to herself
"what a waste...what
can I do with it?" The
curious, resourceful little
girl in her just could not
leave the glass behind
and as a result, the
fractured glass artwork
that Gagnon creates
always surprises her with
its unlimited possibilities
when creating each
original piece. The works
are mounted on canvas
and hung for exhibition.

Elizabeth Harris-Nichols

"Everyday I See"
Nature is decoration, a playground, or resources for humanity. We genetically and physically modify the attributes of nature to suit our needs and comforts. Our exploitation ranges from subtle to extreme, our influence may be a single presence on a slope of a mountain to where we remove entire forests to dramatically alter landscapes. Featured at the Plaskett Gallery is a series that speaks of these issues, though not through a discomforting experience, but in a way of reflection. We cannot change our dependence for we are nature too, however, we can appreciate the beauty and the gifts that are given.
I enjoy working on large canvases. I work with a layering technique over raw canvas with liquid washes of pigment, the mark making is fluid and free and the translucent overlapping of colour create both the shadow and light. This technique is time consuming in construction, and as a result I work on 3 or 4 canvases at a time which enables a consistency and reflection of the series currently undertaken.
