Capital Restoration
1. Restoring the Massey Interior
Massey Restorations and Upgrades
The Massey was built in 1949 of quality
materials that have served the community well for decades. But theatre
technology has changed and things do wear out. After 53 years of
intensive use by over 50 million lovers of the performing arts,
our seats, stage, technical systems and audience services need lots
of attention.
Lighting System Replacement
Hundreds of thousands of artists have performed
under Massey's lights but the system was old and failing so in 2003
we replaced it to the tune of over a quarter million dollars. The
Vancouver Foundation and Heritage Canada helped with part of the
cost and the rest was donated by individuals and earned by the theatre.
We now have a state-of-the-art 288 dimmer stage and house light
system.
Sound System Replacement
The sound system is next on the restoration
agenda. This improvement will greatly enhance the artistic experience
and increase Massey's ability to serve even more professional theatre
companies and touring concerts in our region. We are into the research
phase of this project now and have already completed an expert acoustic
assessment of the orchestra chamber. We hope to begin the installation
phase of this $200,000 plus project in 2004/2005.
